Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining a Temporary Work Visa to Canada
Obtaining a temporary work visa for Canada involves several steps. This guide will walk you through the process to help ensure a smooth application experience.
    Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility

Before starting the application process, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria for a temporary work visa. Key requirements typically include:

    • A valid job offer from a Canadian employer.
    • Relevant qualifications and work experience.
    • Compliance with health and character requirements.
Step 2: Obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
For most work permits, your Canadian employer needs to obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). The LMIA is a document that shows there is a need for a foreign worker to fill the job and that no Canadian worker is available to do it.
    • Employer’s Role: Your employer must apply for and receive a positive LMIA.
    • Your Role: Ensure your employer provides you with a copy of the positive LMIA and a detailed job offer.
    Step 3: Gather Required Documents

Prepare the necessary documents for your work visa application. Commonly required documents include:

    • A valid passport.
    • A job offer letter from your Canadian employer.
    • A copy of the positive LMIA.
    • Proof of your qualifications and work experience (e.g., certificates, diplomas, reference letters).
    • Proof of financial support.
    • Medical examination results (if required).
    • Police clearance certificate (if required).
Step 4: Complete the Work Permit Application
You can apply for a work permit online or through a paper application. The steps are as follows:

    Create an Account:

If applying online, create an account on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

    Fill Out the Application:

Complete the application form, providing accurate and detailed information.

    Upload Documents:

Upload all required documents as specified in the application guidelines.

    Pay the Fees:

Pay the application fee, which may include the work permit processing fee and biometrics fee.

    Step 5: Submit Biometrics
If required, you will receive instructions on how to provide your biometrics (fingerprints and photograph). You will need to visit a designated biometrics collection service point to complete this step.
    Step 6: Wait for Processing
After submitting your application, you will need to wait for it to be processed. Processing times can vary, so check the IRCC website for the most up-to-date information.
    Step 7: Receive a Decision
Once your application is processed, you will receive a decision from IRCC. If approved, you will receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction and, if applicable, a temporary resident visa to enter Canada.
    Step 8: Travel to Canada
With your POE Letter of Introduction and temporary resident visa (if required), you can travel to Canada. Present these documents to the immigration officer at the Canadian port of entry.
Step 9: Obtain Your Work Permit
Upon arrival, the immigration officer will review your documents and issue your work permit. Ensure all information on the work permit is accurate before leaving the port of entry.
Step 10: Begin Your Employment in Canada
Once you have your work permit, you can begin your employment with your Canadian employer as specified in the work permit.
