End of Temporary Policy Allowing Visitors to Apply for Work Permits
Effective immediately, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced the end of a temporary public policy that allowed visitors to apply for work permits from within Canada. This policy, introduced in August 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, provided a valuable opportunity for visitors who were unable to leave Canada due to travel restrictions. It allowed them to apply for work permits without leaving the country and enabled former work permit holders who had changed their status to “visitor” to work legally while waiting for a decision on their new work permit application.
Why the Policy Ended
Although initially set to expire on February 28, 2025, IRCC has decided to terminate the policy early as part of broader efforts to manage the number of temporary residents in Canada and maintain the integrity of the immigration system. The decision was also influenced by concerns that some individuals were exploiting the policy to mislead foreign nationals into unauthorized work situations.
What This Means for You
If you submit a work permit application under this policy before August 28, 2024, IRCC will continue processing your application as per the policy’s guidelines. However, new applications under this policy will no longer be accepted.
